Seven universal factors
Contact, feeling, perception, volition, one-pointedness, mental life faculty and attention are listed as accompanying every moment of consciousness in this system.
This is a doctrinal classification used in Theravāda Abhidhamma study. It is not clinical psychology, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan.
English names and analysis differ across translations and Buddhist schools.
Contact, feeling, perception, volition, one-pointedness, mental life faculty and attention are listed as accompanying every moment of consciousness in this system.
Initial application, sustained application, decision, energy, joy and desire-to-act arise under particular conditions rather than in every moment.
Delusion, moral shamelessness, moral fearlessness and restlessness are universal to unwholesome states in this system. Greed, wrong view, conceit, hatred, envy, avarice, worry, sloth, torpor and doubt arise variably.
Nineteen universals include confidence, mindfulness, moral concern, non-greed, non-hatred, balance and paired qualities of tranquillity, lightness, pliancy, wieldiness, proficiency and rectitude. Three abstinences, two immeasurables and the wisdom faculty complete the group.
This site-authored map follows the familiar fifty-two-factor Theravāda grouping. Seek qualified health care for health concerns rather than using doctrinal categories for self-diagnosis.
